How to add or remove employees from an organizational unit

Assign or remove people from a custom organizational unit in Directory Console → People.

Written by Greg Bennett

You assign or remove an employee from an organizational unit by setting that unit’s field on their profile. Each person belongs to one value of a unit at a time, so selecting a new one automatically removes them from their previous one. Organizational units are managed in OneDirectory and aren’t synced from Microsoft 365.

Assign or remove a person

  1. In your live directory, click Edit in Console in the top bar, next to your profile picture.

  2. In the Directory Console sidebar, select People.

  3. Click the employee’s row. A panel opens on the right, on the Profile Details tab.

  4. Click the Value next to the organizational unit field (for example, Division).

  5. Select a new value to move them there, or clear the field to remove them.

  6. Click the green check to save the change, or the red X to discard it.

Note: The organizational unit must already exist before you can assign people to it. The Edit in Console button is available to Administrators and Directory Editors.
