You can delete a custom organizational unit you no longer need, but only once no people are assigned to it.
Before you start
An organizational unit can only be deleted when no people are assigned to it. Until then, the delete option is greyed out and can’t be clicked. Move everyone out of the unit first, then delete it.
To check who is still in it, open the unit in the Directory Console and look at the profiles tab in its panel. The Profiles column in the list shows the same count.
Move people out of the unit
Organizational units are managed in OneDirectory (they aren’t synced from Microsoft 365), so you change them in the Directory Console:
In the Directory Console sidebar, select People.
Click the person’s row, then on the Profile Details tab click the Value next to the organizational unit field.
Change it to a different value, or clear it, then click the green check to save.
Delete the unit
In your live directory, click Edit in Console in the top bar, next to your profile picture.
In the Directory Console sidebar, open Structure, then select your organizational unit (for example, Divisions).
Click the row of the unit you want to delete. A panel opens on the right.
Click the three dots at the top right of the panel, then choose the delete option.
Confirm by clicking Yes, Delete.
Note: If the delete option is greyed out, people are still assigned to the unit. Deleting cannot be undone. The Edit in Console button is available to Administrators and Directory Editors. |
