How to add an organizational unit

Add a new organizational unit in Directory Console → Structure — name, image, and description.

Written by Greg Bennett

Add a new organizational unit (such as a Division, Branch, or Business Unit) to your directory in the Directory Console. The unit type must already exist as an org unit field — see Building your organizational structure to create one.

Add an organizational unit

  1. In your live directory, click Edit in Console in the top bar, next to your profile picture.

  2. In the Directory Console sidebar, open Structure. Your org units are listed there alongside Offices and Departments. Select the one you want (for example, Divisions).

  3. Click Add at the top of the list.

  4. Type the name, then click Add.

The unit is created straight away and a details panel opens on the right, where you can add an image and a description.

Fill in the details

To set the image, use the area at the top of the panel: drop an image onto Drop a photo here, or click to choose, click it to pick a file, click Get image from URL to paste a web address, or click Choose a background style to apply one of the built-in gradients.

To set a value such as the description, click the Value cell next to the field and type. Click the green check to save it, or the red X to discard it. Each field saves on its own, so there’s no separate Save button.

Note: A new unit has no people in it yet, so it appears in the Directory Console but not in your live directory until at least one person is assigned to it. Organizational units are managed in OneDirectory and aren’t synced from Microsoft 365. The Edit in Console button is available to Administrators and Directory Editors.
