Why isn't a profile photo updating?

Profile photos sync from Microsoft 365 — troubleshoot propagation delays, caching, and the circle crop.

Written by Greg Bennett

Profile photos in OneDirectory sync from Microsoft 365. If a photo looks wrong or out of date, it’s usually a sync-timing or caching issue.

Common causes and fixes

  • Microsoft propagation delay. A photo changed in Microsoft 365 can take time to appear. Photos refresh on a daily cycle in OneDirectory.

  • Browser cache. Do a hard refresh (Ctrl+F5, or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac) to clear a cached image.

  • Where the photo comes from. You can set a photo from any Microsoft 365 app (Teams, Outlook, the admin center). If the Photo field is editable in OneDirectory, you can also upload directly.

  • Circle vs square crop. The crop is applied by Microsoft, so newer and older photos can look different; this originates outside OneDirectory.

Still not updating?

If a photo is correct in Microsoft 365 but still wrong in OneDirectory after a day and a hard refresh, contact OneDirectory Support.
