Why is a field read-only or not updating?

A field's data source decides whether it can be edited in OneDirectory and whether it syncs from Microsoft 365.

Written by Greg Bennett

Whether a field can be edited in OneDirectory — and whether it updates from Microsoft 365 — depends on its data source.

How it works

  • Synced fields (Microsoft 365) are read-only in OneDirectory. Change them in Microsoft 365 and they sync across.

  • Editable fields (OneDirectory) are managed in OneDirectory and no longer sync from Microsoft 365.

To change which one a field uses, see Making a field editable.

If a field won’t update

  • If it’s a synced field, update it in Microsoft 365 and wait for the next sync.

  • If it’s editable in OneDirectory, update it in OneDirectory — Microsoft changes won’t flow in.

  • Switching a field back to syncing from Microsoft 365 requires OneDirectory Support.

Note: Skills and Hobbies & Interests are OneDirectory Dataset fields and aren’t synced from Microsoft 365.
