Making a field editable (Microsoft 365 vs OneDirectory)

Switch a field's data source from Microsoft 365 to OneDirectory to make it editable. This breaks sync for that field.

Written by Greg Bennett

By default, most fields sync one-way from Microsoft 365 — so you make changes in Microsoft and they flow into OneDirectory. You can instead make a field editable directly in OneDirectory by changing its Data Source.

Open Fields

  1. In the OneDirectory sidebar (your live employee directory), click Directory Console at the bottom.

  2. In the Directory Console sidebar, select Fields.

How the data source works

  • Data Source = Microsoft 365 — the field syncs from Microsoft 365 / Entra ID and is read-only in OneDirectory. The field’s panel shows the mapped Microsoft 365 field and its sync schedule.

  • Data Source = OneDirectory — the field becomes editable directly in OneDirectory.

Make a field editable

  1. Click the field to open its panel.

  2. Change Data Source from Microsoft 365 to OneDirectory. Existing data is retained.

  3. Set who can edit it — see Setting field edit permissions.

Important: Switching a field to OneDirectory breaks the Microsoft 365 sync for that field only — it will no longer update from Microsoft. To re-enable syncing for that field later, contact OneDirectory Support.
