The org chart is built from each employee’s Manager field. Gaps usually mean a manager isn’t set — and a reporting loop can stop the chart from rendering at all.
Common causes of gaps
No manager set. Anyone without a Manager in Microsoft 365 won’t appear in the org chart. Set the Manager field in Microsoft 365 and it syncs to OneDirectory.
No starting person set. Every chart needs someone at the top — check the Starts From field on the chart in Directory Console → Org Charts.
People pane empty. The profile people pane needs the Manager field enabled to show reporting lines.
The org chart won’t render (reporting loops)
If the person at the top of the tree reports to someone lower in the tree — or their Manager is set to someone below them — it creates a circular reference (loop), and the org chart won’t render.
The person (or people) a chart starts from must not have a Manager set. Clear the Manager field on the top person in Microsoft 365 so the reporting chain ends cleanly at the top.
Important: People a chart starts from can’t have a manager. If a top-level person’s Manager points to someone lower in the organization, remove it — this is the usual fix for an org chart that won’t load. |
Secondary relationships
To show non-direct relationships, enable the Dotted Line Manager and Assistant fields.
