Showing the Company field (organizations with more than one company)

Turn on the Company organizational structure field so each person's company shows on their profile and can be used to group and filter the directory.

Written by Greg Bennett

If your tenant covers more than one legal entity or trading name, OneDirectory ships a Company field you can turn on so each person's company shows on their profile and can be used to group and filter the directory.

Company is an organizational structure field, alongside Office and Department. It is disabled by default, which is why it does not appear on profiles until you enable it.

Enable the Company field

  1. Open the Directory Console: click Edit in Console in the top bar next to your profile picture, or Directory Console at the bottom of the OneDirectory sidebar.

  2. In the Directory Console sidebar, select Fields.

  3. Under Organizational Structure Fields, click Company.

  4. In the panel on the right, turn Enabled on. The panel also shows the field’s Field Name (CompanyName), which is the Microsoft 365 attribute it reads from.

Check your coverage first. The Coverage column on the Company row tells you how many profiles already have a company value. If coverage is high, the data is already syncing from Microsoft 365 and the field will populate as soon as you enable it. If it is low or zero, see Where the value comes from below.

Where the value comes from

Company reads the CompanyName attribute on each user in Microsoft 365 / Entra ID. If the field is empty for most people, that attribute has not been set in Microsoft 365 — populate it there and it will appear at the next sync.

If you would rather maintain company values inside OneDirectory instead of in Microsoft 365, switch the field's data source. Note that this stops the field syncing from Microsoft 365. See Making a field editable.

More than one company in one directory

A single OneDirectory environment can hold people from several companies. Everyone stays in one directory and one search, and Company becomes another way to group them — the same way Office and Department do.

If you need companies kept fully apart rather than grouped, with separate directories and separate sign-in, contact us at support@onedirectory.com or through in-app chat so we can look at your setup.

Other organizational units

Company, Office and Department are not the only groupings available. Under Organizational Structure Fields, Add org unit field lets you create your own — a Division or a Region, for example. See Building your organizational structure.
