How to edit employee profiles in the Directory Console

Edit any employee's profile fields in Directory Console → People, as an alternative to editing on the profile itself.

Written by Greg Bennett

There are two ways to edit an employee’s profile. You can edit it directly on their profile in your directory, as you always have, or you can edit it in the Directory Console. The Console is the faster option when you’re updating several people, because you don’t have to open each profile page.

Edit a profile in the Console

  1. In your live directory, click Edit in Console in the top bar, next to your profile picture.

  2. In the Directory Console sidebar, select People.

  3. Click the employee’s row. A panel opens on the right, on the Profile Details tab.

  4. Click the Value cell next to the field you want to change. It becomes editable in place.

  5. Enter the new value, then click the green check to save it or the red X to discard it. Pressing Esc also cancels.

Each field saves on its own, so there’s no separate Save button for the whole profile. Saved values appear in the People list straight away.

People who don’t have a Microsoft 365 account, such as contractors or frontline staff, are under People → Managed Profiles and are edited the same way. See How to add managed profiles.

Finding fields

Fields are shown in groups such as Identity Information, Job Information, and Org Structure. Use the Grouped and Alphabetical toggle at the top right of the list to switch between grouped order and a single alphabetical list, and the filter icon next to Field to narrow the list down.

What you can and can’t edit

  • Fields editable in OneDirectory can be changed here.

  • Fields synced from Microsoft 365 are read-only. Change those in Entra ID or the Microsoft 365 admin center and they sync across. See Why is a field read-only or not updating?

Note: Editing profiles in the Console is available to Administrators and Directory Editors only. Employees can still edit their own profile in the directory, for the fields your administrator has made editable. The Manage tab in the same panel is where you hide or show a person and correct their profile type.
